HCL Fumes Scrubber Installation

A manufacturer specializing in industrial cleaning products sought to replace their aging wet scrubber system, which had reached the end of its service life. Previously partnered with a different scrubber vendor, SAZ ENVIRO stepped in to address their project objectives with enhanced service, improved performance, and competitive pricing.

The new scrubber system was required to effectively remove hydrochloric acid (HCl) fumes emitted from a bulk tank containing 36% HCl. Given the installation’s outdoor location in Kolkata, the system required specific design features, including freeze protection and a rating to withstand high outdoor wind speeds.

Scope of Supply

The solution included a 2500 ACFM Polypropylene Packed Tower Scrubbing System, comprising:

  • Packed Tower: Designed to maximize contact between the HCl fumes and the scrubbing liquid, enhancing removal efficiency.
  • Reservoir: A dedicated tank for collecting the scrubbing liquid, facilitating the recirculation process.
  • Packing: Specifically engineered packing material that provides a large surface area for gas-liquid interaction, crucial for effective scrubbing.
  • Mist Eliminator: A crucial component to remove any liquid droplets from the gas stream before discharge, ensuring compliance with emissions standards.
  • Recirculation Pump and Piping: To maintain an optimal flow of scrubbing liquid, enhancing the system’s efficiency.
  • Instrumentation: Includes:
    • Differential pressure gauge for monitoring system performance.
    • Liquid pressure gauge for ensuring optimal flow rates.
    • Level control to manage liquid levels in the reservoir.
    • Conductivity sensor for monitoring scrubbing solution concentration.

Additional components included:

  • Control Panel and Junction Box: For centralized operation and monitoring of the system.
  • Disconnects: Two safety disconnects for electrical components, enhancing operational safety.
  • Freeze Protection: Incorporating heating elements, heat tracing, and insulation to protect the system from cold weather impacts.
  • Exhaust Stack: Engineered to safely release cleaned air while maintaining compliance with environmental regulations.
  • 316SS Support Structure: A robust structure with acid-resistant coating on the lower 12 inches to withstand corrosive effects.

The project also encompassed installation, start-up, and operator training to ensure effective operation from day one.

Since the installation, SAZ ENVIRO has provided comprehensive support, helping the manufacturer fine-tune the scrubber’s performance and addressing any questions that arose. The scrubber has been operating successfully, delivering efficient removal of HCl fumes during tank filling and routine operations.

Packed bed scrubbers represent a sustainable solution for venting storage tanks containing water-soluble pollutants like HCl. SAZ ENVIRO’s designs prioritize resilience against harsh weather conditions, including high winds and cold temperatures. Satisfied with the scrubber’s performance and SAZ ENVIRO’s quality of service, the manufacturer is now considering the deployment of additional SAZ ENVIRO scrubbers across various facilities.
