Sulfur Dioxide Scrubber Installation kenya

An industrial wastewater treatment facility in Kenya faced stringent updates to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Air Quality Regulations, requiring sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions to be reduced to a maximum of 18 ppmv (parts per million by volume). The plant’s multiple hearth incinerator, used to combust biosolids, generated exhaust gas containing 500–600 ppmv SO₂, exceeding permissible limits. While an existing wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP) effectively removed particulate matter, it could not address acidic gases like SO₂. The plant required a cost-effective, space-efficient solution to integrate downstream of the WESP, ensuring compliance with Kenya’s Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA). Key challenges included high humidity in the exhaust stream, corrosive gas conditions, and the need for minimal operator intervention.

Solution
SAZ ENVIRO designed a custom-packed tower wet scrubber to neutralize SO₂ emissions using a high-efficiency caustic scrubbing system (18–22% NaOH solution), tailored to Kenya’s operational and climatic conditions. Key innovations included:

  1. Enhanced Scrubbing Performance:
    • Gas Flow Rate: 10,000 ACFM (actual cubic feet per minute) with a gas velocity of 3.2 m/s and a pressure drop of 1.0 inch WC, optimized for energy efficiency.
    • Packing Media: Durable polypropylene Tri-Packs (1.5-inch diameter), achieving 99% SO₂ removal efficiency by maximizing gas-liquid contact.
    • Mist Elimination: A two-stage fiber-reinforced polypropylene (FRPP) mist eliminator with 99.5% efficiency, critical for Kenya’s humid environment.
  2. Corrosion-Resistant Design:
    • Constructed from FRPP (fiber-reinforced polypropylene) and 316L stainless steel critical components, ensuring longevity in corrosive, high-moisture conditions (temperatures up to 75°C).
  3. Adaptive Control System:
    • Automated PLC Controls: Real-time monitoring of pH, liquid level, and gas flow, with automated NaOH dosing to maintain optimal scrubbing chemistry (pH 9.5–11.5).
    • Low-Consumption Design: Closed-loop recirculation reduced NaOH consumption to 45 L/hr, minimizing operational costs.
  4. Localized Support:
    • SAZ ENVIRO partnered with Kenyan engineering contractors for installation, ensuring compliance with local safety and construction standards.

Result
The SAZ ENVIRO scrubber was installed and commissioned within 5 weeks, with on-site training for plant operators. Post-installation testing demonstrated:

  • SO₂ reduction from 580 ppmv to 6 ppmv, surpassing NEMA’s 18 ppmv limit.
  • 95% uptime due to ruggedized materials and automated controls suited to Kenya’s variable operational conditions.
  • Full compliance with NEMA’s Air Quality Regulations (2014) under EMCA and alignment with ISO 14001 environmental management standards.

The plant’s facilities manager stated: “SAZ ENVIRO’s scrubber not only resolved our compliance challenges but also reduced chemical costs by 30% through efficient NaOH usage. Their local technical support ensured minimal downtime during integration.”

By leveraging region-specific engineering and robust automation, SAZ ENVIRO delivered a sustainable solution that aligns with Kenya’s vision for cleaner industrial growth.
